INDOMET PENTA has been specially developed for use in diffusion pumps. Our oil is suitable for all types of diffusion pumps. It is designed for a very wide vacuum pressure range. The vapor pressure and backflow are so low that the use of cold traps is not required for most vacuum applications. Ultra-high vacuum up to the 10E-11 mbar range can be achieved with cold traps, without cold traps up to the 10E-10 mbar range.

Due to the higher phenyl components in the siloxane chain, the phenyl-methyl-siloxane molecule has a ~ 12.8% higher mass. This causes a slightly higher evaporation temperature and thus a higher impact energy in the steam jet of the pump. This causes an improvement in the pumping speed, the ultimate pressure and the fore-vacuum resistance.


INDOMET PENTA is ~ 98% pure and contains only one vacuum-effective component. All impurities and inactive ingredients were extracted.

The manufacture of our INDOMET PENTA product begins with a strict quality control of the raw materials. High Vacuum System


Vacuum processes take place in a pressure range from 10E-2 to 10E-3 mbar. Before the process can start, all process-contaminating substances must be pumped out. For this purpose, the vacuum chamber is pumped down to a vacuum pressure of 10E-4 to 10E-9 mbar. Only then are process gases introduced and the process pressure set.


The vacuum pumping station of a high vacuum system consists of a multi-stage pumping station. The mechanically operating pumps generate a fore-vacuum. If the fore-vacuum is sufficient, the diffusion pump can be switched on.


Diffusion pumps are often used when high suction capacities are required. Diffusion pumps are cheaper to purchase than comparable high vacuum pumps. However, the operating costs of diffusion pumps are significantly higher. The diffusion pump oil must be continuously heated and then cooled down again. All of the energy is completely dissipated with the cooling water.

Diffusion Pump / Steam Jet Pump

Diffusion pumps are among the high vacuum pumps. The diffusion pumps consist of a cylindrical, water-cooled pump body and a multi-stage nozzle system inside. The boiling chamber with the propellant is located at the bottom of the pump body. The electrical heating elements are located under the floor.

The pumps require a fore-vacuum, which is generated with fore-vacuum pumps.

The oil is evaporated at a fore-vacuum pressure of <0.7 x 10E-1 mbar. The steam flows through the riser pipes in the nozzle system and exits the ring-shaped nozzles at supersonic speed. The steam jet spreads like an umbrella up to the housing wall. The steam immediately condenses on the cooled wall and flows back into the boiler room on the wall. Gases from the recipient are captured by the steam jet and carried away, compressed by the multi-stage nozzle system and finally pumped out by the backing pump.

Propellant


In the last few decades, silicone oils have established themselves as the preferred propellant. INDOMET PENTA is made on the basis of phenyl-methyl-silioxane and have high molecular structures. You can achieve very low vapor pressures and ultimate vacuum pressures. The final pressures and vapor pressures are between 10E-7 mbar and extend into the ultra-high vacuum range of 10E-11 mbar. Our oils are chemically inert and have a very good resistance to oxidation. Even when in the event of a sudden vacuum brake, these fluids do not oxidize and can still be used.


Polyphenyl Ether and PerFluoroPolyEther (PFPE) are special propellants for very demanding applications. They can achieve an ultra-high vacuum down to the 10E-11 mbar range and are extremely chemically resistant. There are a variety of products on the market for a relatively small number of uses. These fluids must be selected very carefully to meet the requirements of the plant type and process application. The costs for these fluids are as expected very high.


Mineral oils (hydrocarbons) are used less frequently as they have considerable disadvantages.

They usually have a poorer vapor pressure and therefore do not achieve such good final pressures as silicone oils. Due to the unsatisfactory oxidation resistance of the mineral oils, they age much faster and have to be changed more frequently. They also harbor considerable risks in the event of vacuum brake-in. The oil can break down through oxidation and hydrolysis and form components that are harmful to health. In the worst case, it can also cause an explosion in the pump.

Pre-Vacuum Resistance


The critical pre-pressure is the highest pressure that a pump can tolerate in the backline. If the pressure is higher than the critical pre-pressure, the pump can come to a standstill. The critical pre-pressure depends on the pump design, the performance of the heaters and the diffusion pump oil used in the diffusion pump.

Suction Capacity / Suction Power


The pumping speed is the volume that flows through the suction port of a pump in a certain time. Diffusion pumps are available in all sizes, with pumping speeds from a few liters per second to over 50,000 liters per second.


The suction power is the mass flow through the suction port of a pump. The suction power is of great importance and should not be confused with the suction capacity. The suction power is important for the design of the backing pumps for a high vacuum diffusion pump.

Ultimate Pressure / Vapor Pressure

The ultimate pressure is the lowest pressure that can be achieved in a vacuum system. This pressure depends on many parameters. From the cleanliness and tightness of the vacuum system, from the gas diffusion of the surfaces, from the pumping speed of the pump and from the vapor pressure of the propellant used in the diffusion pump. A good ultimate vacuum pressure cannot be achieved if the vapor pressure of the propellant is insufficient.


The vapor pressure is the pressure that is established over a medium (fluid) in a closed system at a certain temperature (thermodynamic equilibrium). In a liquid, the particles tend to leave the liquid structure at a temperature> 0 ° K.

Oil Back Streaming


Cold caps and / or shell baffles prevent the oil from flowing back into the recipient. Vapor barriers consist of cooled baffles that prevent oil molecules from passing through. To increase the temperature difference, liquid nitrogen (< 77° K) is also used for cooling.

Industrial chemicals such as diffusion pump oils may only be manufactured within the EU or imported into the EU if the corresponding chemical substance is registered and tested, depending on the quantity, with the European Chemicals Agency. This often makes buyers unknowingly criminal.
